Trolling for Striped Bass with the Penn 113HSP
There is a ton of fishing equipment on the market today. Needless to say things can get rather confusing very quickly, especially for the newcomer. Keeping equipment purchases as economical and simple as possible can help out big time in the long run.
With this in mind, I am going to keep this section as simple as possible, by only writing about gear that I have used, and still use today when trolling the tube and worm. It’s very easy to go overboard when it comes to purchasing fishing equipment!
Reels for Trolling the Tube and Worm
Penn 113
For decades my favorite fishing reel for trolling purposes has been the Penn 113HSP. This reel is great for many reasons including its reasonable price tag. Here’s a couple more reasons why the Penn 113 is an all time favorite:
* Durability throughout many seasons
My first Penn 113 was purchased by my father over a decade ago. We used that Penn 113 to troll tubes from my family’s small carolina skiff off the coast of Cape Cod.
Over the years that specific Penn has caught a ton of big bass. Incredibly that reel continues to work wonderfully today. I used it all this past season and expect to continue using that reel this coming year.
* Ease of maintenance
One of the reasons why the Penn 113 is so durable is that it is so simple to maintain. I am certainly no expert when it comes to cleaning and fixing reels. But after a little online research, I can now overhaul the Penn 113 in under an hour.
For the visual learner, Penn 113 diagrams are available on the internet.
The reel has saved me quite a bit of money over the long haul. There are some fantastic tutorials by Alan Tani on how to rebuild the Penn 113. Tani is a pro and makes cleaning reels look easy. Hopefully someday we can all be this proficient!
